Who owns your digital self?
And, just as urgently, who gets to build it. The unsettling feature of the digital footprint is that we leave it passively — which means a convincing replica of you can, in principle, be assembled after your death from data you never consented to hand over. Who holds that right: you, your family, or the company that stores your messages? The Cambridge ethicists studying this call the field an ethical “minefield” and press for consent from the person being recreated before they die, along with clear ways to retire a replica with dignity. Most services today ask for neither. Before it is a philosophical puzzle, digital immortality is a consent problem — and the person with the least say in it is the one being brought back.

Second, the claim that AI is “eroding human cognition” is a reasonable concern, not a settled finding. We have suggestive evidence that offloading effort reduces engagement, but not proof of civilizational decline. The honest position is caution, not alarm: these are powerful tools that can extend memory and comfort the bereaved — and, used without intention, can also let real capacities quietly atrophy. Both things are true at once.
AI is not a cure for mortality. It is humanity’s most sophisticated attempt to linger — a haunting, interactive echo.
